Antique Hooked Rug Restoration & Repair by Springhouse in the Meadow

The Repair and Restoration Process

Picture
This rug has been re-backed with primitive linen to ensure longevity. The edges were badly worn and parts had unraveled so I removed the first two rows of the border and then whip stitched the entire border in dark green wool -- it looks nice and will prevent the edges from wearing so badly in the future.

Close up of an area on the underside of the rug. The upper side had a small hole where wool had unraveled -- good that it was caught while still small. It was rehooked into the new backing and then stitched to hold securely.

Again the underside is shown with the new primitive linen backing and whip stitching.

This family heirloom, with its unique style, has been fully restored and can now safely be placed on the floor or hung on the wall if the owner wishes.

Next on the list for restoration is an antique welcome rug. These rugs were usually placed in front of a fireplace hearth or doorway. This one has a big hole and some of the colors have faded to the point where they should be replaced. Once repairs are finished, along with new whip stitch edging, it will be an attractive rug again. This rug has already been cleaned in preparation for repair.
